How to Take Your Dog on a Boat Ride
Your four-legged best friend may be able to join your family on your next boating trip! It takes the right pup personality and the proper preparation from the owners to make this happen, of course.
Here at White’s Marine Center, we love all things boating. We created the following guide to help you prepare your dog for a fun voyage.
Introducing Your Dog to Boat Rides
The first time your dog steps on the boat shouldn't be your travel day. Keep in mind the boat is a foreign, potentially scary environment for your dog. You'll want to get her used to the boat first before going on a trip.
Get the whole family together on the boat. Have everyone talk in happy, calm voices. Bring along their favorite toys and treats. Help them associate the boat with fun. Do this a few times on short trips to build confidence. Then your pup is ready for the voyage!
Packing for the Boat Ride
Your dog will need a few things on the boat.
First, pack fresh water since the lake or river water could be full of contaminants that can make your dog sick.
Second, make sure your dog is wearing a collar and tags. There's always the chance that you get separated on land.
Third, just like everyone else on board, your dog should wear a life jacket. It'll help them to stay afloat if they fall overboard.
You will also want to pack along toys and treats. They help reward good behavior. They also keep your dog busy so they won't get bored and fall into bad behavior (like chewing the seat).
During the Boat Ride
When your dog is on the boat, monitor their needs. Give them food, but don't overfeed them (dogs can get seasick too). Look for signs of stress, such as pacing or whining. If your dog seems distressed, it's time to head back to shore.
