Clean Metal Surfaces

When the boat is on a trailer or a lift, use clean water to rinse off the metal surfaces. This is a great way to break up and release any dirt that's accumulated on the metal, so it's less likely to leave scratches. Using the boat manufacturer's recommended aluminum cleaner, spray down the metal surfaces. Allow the cleaner to sit for a few minutes, and use a hose to rinse it off. In some cases, you might need to use a non-abrasive sponge to remove algae or water stains. This process takes time, but it's the easiest way to keep the metal looking fresh.

Wipe Down the Upholstery

Spray a clean cloth with a marine-grade upholstery cleaner, and wipe down the seats in your pontoon boat. You can also use a solution of soap and water. If possible, lift up the cushions to reach the sides, bottom, and back panels. Read the instructions on the bottle; some cleaners should also be wiped off with a clean, damp cloth. After you're done, allow the cushions to dry completely before replacing them — that way, you can reduce the risk of mildew buildup.

Remove Debris from the Carpet

During a day on the water, the carpet in your pontoon boat tends to collect dirt, crumbs, and other debris. About once a week during boating season, it's a good idea to clean the carpet. Use the tools you have; a wet-dry vac is a great option, but you can also use a leaf blower to release debris. Your manual might also suggest rinsing down the carpet to get rid of caked-on dirt and dust.

Clean and Polish Pontoon Components

Once the big areas are done, it's time to focus on the details. Using soap and water, clean off the steering wheel, steps, and helm. If your pontoon boat has wood trim, use marine-grade varnish for a clean, polished look.

With regular wipe-downs and twice-yearly deep-cleaning, it's easy to keep your pontoon boat in top shape. Are you thinking about buying a pontoon?
